My Studio Setup

Inside the Studio: Where My Artwork Comes to Life

There’s something deeply personal about the space where an artist creates. It’s not just a room filled with pencils, paper, and drawings — it becomes part of the process itself.

The atmosphere, the light, the quiet moments, and even the interruptions from curious pets all shape the work in ways people rarely see.

Today I thought I’d share a glimpse into my studio and the environment behind my graphite and coloured pencil artwork.

A Space Built Around Light

Natural light is one of the most important elements in my workspace.

Much of my work relies on subtle tonal transitions, delicate textures, and careful colour layering, so being able to see every nuance clearly is essential.

The studio is flooded with daylight throughout the day, creating an ideal environment for long drawing sessions.

The changing light also helps me step back and reassess a piece with fresh eyes as the day progresses — something that’s surprisingly important when working in such fine detail.

The Quiet Side of Creating Art

People often imagine art studios as energetic, chaotic places, but mine is usually calm and focused.

Much of the work involves long periods of concentration, refining details and studying texture, light, and expression.

That quiet focus is one of the things I love most about drawing. It allows me to completely immerse myself in the subject — whether it’s capturing the personality of a beloved pet or the emotion within a portrait.

The Drawing Board

Most days begin at the easel with reference images, pencils arranged nearby, and a drawing already in progress.

Whether I’m working on a pet portrait, a wildlife piece, or a deeply personal commission, the process is always slow and deliberate.

Coloured pencil and graphite work demand patience. Layers are built gradually over many hours, often with tiny adjustments that might not even be noticeable until the entire piece is complete. From a distance the work can appear photographic, but up close you can see the thousands of individual marks that bring the artwork to life.

Studio Companions

Of course, no studio is ever entirely peaceful.

There’s usually a cat or two supervising proceedings from nearby, occasionally offering opinions on compositions or demanding attention at the least convenient moment.

Like many artists, I’ve learned that pets tend to believe they’re part of the creative team.
And honestly, Higgledy and Piggledy probably are.

More Than Just a Workspace

Over time, the studio has become more than simply a place to draw.

It’s where ideas develop, commissions come to life, and countless hours of dedication slowly transform blank paper into finished artwork.

It’s also where I continue learning, experimenting, and pushing my work further with every piece I create.
