From left to right, the series unfolds as an emotional progression.
In 2022, I set out to explore something that sits at the intersection of control and abandon — the human body in motion.
The result was a three-piece graphite series: Elation, Euphoria, and Elegance. Each drawing, rendered at A2 scale on 300gsm Fabriano Artistico hot pressed paper, became a study not just of form, but of feeling.
Working in graphite allowed me to strip everything back to its essentials — light, shadow, tension, and release. Without the distraction of colour, the focus shifts entirely to movement: the arc of a spine, the extension of a limb, the fleeting moment where gravity seems negotiable.
Elation captures a grounded intensity — a surge of energy contained within the body. The figure bends and twists, caught in a moment that feels both powerful and transitional, as though something is building beneath the surface.
Euphoria lifts us away from the earth. Here, the figure is suspended mid-air, freed from weight and constraint. It represents a moment of pure release — a fleeting, almost impossible state where effort dissolves into expression.
Elegance brings a sense of resolution. The movement becomes refined, controlled, and poised. There is still energy, but it is disciplined — shaped into something deliberate and graceful.
Together, the works reflect my ongoing fascination with modern dance — not just as performance, but as a language of emotion. Each piece is rooted in observation, but ultimately driven by interpretation: an attempt to translate movement into something still, yet alive.
